Dr Jennifer Li

BDS (XJTU), MDS in Ortho (XJTU), Ph.D (HKU), Postdoc (UMich), FDSRCS (Edin)

Dr Jennifer Li (pronounced Lee) brings her international recognition to Auckland, having taught in Sydney and Hong Kong, and studied at the University of Michigan. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Jennifer started her bachelor of dental medicine training from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1996 and was awarded her degree in 2001. She then started orthodontic speciality training the same year and completed a three year master of orthodontic clinical training in 2004. After a half year of study break and travel in Birmingham, UK, Jennifer proceeded a further Ph.D study at the University of Hong Kong, living in Hong Kong from 2005 until 2009. 

She then moved to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor USA, where for 14 months at the Michigan Dental School she carried her research in craniofacial developmental biology with a focus on palatogenesis using conditional knock out mice models.

During this period, Jennifer passed the Orthodontic speciality exam from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, MDSRCS (Edin), and became an oversea member with the college in 2008. She also published research papers related to her scientific research work.

Jennifer moved from Ann Arbor to Sydney University’s Discipline of Orthodontics, working as a lecturer in Orthodontics from 2010 for more than four years, which included two days a week of clinical patients care, teaching, research, and clinical supervision. She then continued with a sleep apnoea study within St George hospital, the centre of sleep medicine at the University of New South Wales in 2015. Starting from 2016 Jennifer moved back to the University of Hong Kong being appointed as a clinical assistant professor in Orthodontics until 2018. In 2017, Jennifer was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Orthodontics and became a senior clinician, seeing private orthodontic patients in Prince Philip Dental Hospital of Hong Kong.

Jennifer returned to Sydney, completed the required license related submission and exams with The New Zealand Dental Council, and has worked in Auckland since 2020 as an orthodontic specialist.

Apart from working within the orthodontic field, Jennifer has a wide range of hobbies, including sports, and outdoor activities. In her youth she was trained for 5 years to play the Chinese Zither, and passed the national exam of band 6 in Guzheng.

Jennifer has a lovely and cheerful character, is friendly and open.

She speaks fluent English as well as Cantonese and Mandarin.
